October 12th, 1492.

It was not lost, certainly many people knew where it was, but for European knowledge this is the date and the event. Most of us were raised on European traditions, so, why fight it, we know the vikings were here, we know a lot of stuff, but for the record, the only official ceremony of landing and claiming was carried upon the beaches of San Salvador (Probably Santo Domingo) by Christopher Columbus & his Spanish funded expedition.

Santo Domingo could be the capital of the Dominican Republic and the oldest European town in the Americas and in the event that you wish to see one of many UNESCO World Heritage List then, that hotelbye is the place. Santo Domingo is really a university of countries and neighborhoods. It's where the sounds of living, domino parts slapped on tables, backfiring mufflers and horns from severe traffic. In the center of the city is the Zona Colonial, where you will discover among the oldest churches and the oldest remaining European. Also, in the Zona Colonial you might find Gazcue, among the city's oldest neighborhoods, filled with previous Victorian houses and tree-lined streets.

The first people probably arrived in North America from siberia about 16,000 years ago. The native Americans had been here for many thousands of years before the arrival of latecomers like the Chinese, the Vikings and the Europeans.

well natives have been traced to here in the us. "The Bering Land Bridge is significant for several reasons, ....it enabled human migration to the Americas from Asia about 12,000 years ago..." so that means there were human inhabitants from that time. But many give credit to Columbus but there is evidence that the natives of the new england area had already come in contact with the vikings.

It bothers me that so many people say "1492" because first of all Native Americans crossed over into North America from Siberia tens of thousands of years ago. Secondly, the vikings landed in Canada and Amerigo Vaspucci, for whose name "America" is taken from, arrived long before Columbus. We learn of Columbus more then any other explorer because his story has more drama to it, its more interesting. I think it is wrong to teach our children only one part of a long amazing story.
