its called a clapboard, as you may have already found out from previous answers. Its used as a marker so that the director knows which scene and take he and the editor is watching when they decide what to use and what not to in the editing of the film. The scene number and take number are written on the clapboard and then filmed before the take.

the technical term is Slate it is known/called a clapboard. Marker is a term used to sinc the sound with the video.
