Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system and it is the fifth planet from the Sun. Since all the planets are named after gods, we have to tell you which one Jupiter is. Jupiter is from Roman mythology and is the equivalent to Zeus from Greek mythology.

Jupiter - What It's All About
Jupiter is a planet made mostly of gases. It is part of a group sometimes called the Jovian planets (gas giants). This planet has no solid surface. Jupiter is sometimes called a failed star because it is made up entirely of gases. It would, however, have to be much larger in size than it is today to be qualified as a star. Jupiter has about 60 moons but the four largest moons were discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610. The moons, Io, Europa,
Europa
Ganymede and Callisto were discovered using a telescope and are now called the Galilean moons. This was also the first observation of moons other than Earth's.

There is one feature of Jupiter that is very distinct. Jupiter has something called the Great Red Spot. While this feature looks something like a big ketchup smudge on the planet, it is actually a very, very big hurricane. The spot was first discovered by Cassini (an Italian astronomer) in 1665. That means the storm has lasted hundreds of years. Even from Earth, you can see the spot using a telescope. The storm is bigger than three Earths put together. Scary, huh?

Jupiter is well know as the largest planet in our solar system. It is a gas giant which is a collection of gases like methane, and hydrogen. Unlike the other gas giants in our solar system Jupiter has more of solid core so it has a greater gravational pull than any other planet.

Comets come from the Kiper Belt and the Ort Cloud. They are sent to fall into the sun, or in an orbit around the sun by a nudge from Jupiter. Jupiter is also doing the Earth a great service. As comet Shoemaker-Levey 9 proved Jupiter is sucking in a lot of dangerous comets and asteroids. The either crash into Jupiter or they join it's large family of moons (currently Jupiter has 63 moons).

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jupiter
"Jupiter is 2.5 times more massive than all the other planets combined,..It is 318 times more massive than Earth, with a diameter 11 times that of Earth, and a volume 1300 times that of Earth. Quite naturally, Jupiter's gravitational influence has dominated the evolution of the solar system."

Any planet that is 12 times as large as Jupiter becomes a brown dwarf (a small star), or a bigger star if it has more mass.

"When it was younger and hotter, Jupiter was much larger than it is today, though previously Saturn would have been even bigger than Jupiter due to its lower mass: Saturn has a much weaker gravitational pull and with more heat, both planets would have been more bloated (and because of Saturn's lower core mass, it would have been more bloated). In general, the more massive the core, the smaller the planet in size."

Jupiter is often called a failed star, because it is so big, and it emitts more light than it takes in from the sun.

The great Red Spot on Jupiter is a storm that has been churning for at least 340 years. It is large enough to absorb the entire Earth.

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun. 483 million miles from the sun and has at LEAST 15 moons. Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar system. It is a giant ball of gass with a rocky center. No one has ever seen the surface of Jupiter, it is covered with thick clouds. These clouds are white, yellow, tan, orange, and red. Strong winds blow the clouds around. It is freezing cold at the top of the clouds and boiling hot in the center of Jupiter. There is a large red spot on Jupiter that scientists think is a giant storm. One year on Jupiter is as long as 12 years on Earth and one day is almost 10 hours long

Jupiter (5.2 AU), at 318 Earth masses, is 2.5 times the mass of all the other planets put together. Its composition of largely hydrogen and helium is not very different from that of the Sun. Jupiter's strong internal heat creates a number of semi-permanent features in its atmosphere, such as cloud bands and the Great Red Spot. Three of its 63 satellites, Ganymede, Io, and Europa share elements in common with the terrestrial planets, such as volcanism and internal heating. Ganymede has a larger diameter than Mercury.

Jupiter, but I guess if you consider the rings too, then it would be Saturn, I would think. In diameter, it is Jupiter. I ought to know, I lived there for 162 years before moving to the earth. I had to move to the earth because I got laid off from my job, and I had 16 aliens I had to feed. The job market there was real bad, and the only job I could find was cleaning up space junk, and selling it for scrap metal. I could only make about 20 nano's a day doing that, and the chicken bills were more than this a day. Oh well, I do hope I have been some help to you, but I got my doubts about you believing me for some reason or the other. Have Fun!

Jupiter is biggest and Saturn next biggest. Planets larger than Jupiter have been found orbiting other stars, often at very close distances (less than 1 AU) to their parent stars: these are known collectively as "hot Jupiters".

It is thought they may be a different kind of planet from the gas giant our own Jupiter is, orbiting as it does at 5 AU from the Sun.

Jupiter is the largest "Planet". You can't count the Sun because the Sun isn't a "Planet"...it is a Solar body...or actually another "Star"...class G-2
