Sept. 1, 2006, the 2 days after Hurricane Katrina hit was the day I received my nicest compliment. My husband and I walked to the convenience store where we stop for gas and cokes and such. Before we had left the house, I put on a pair of tennis shoes that my daughter just hated. Everytime I wore those shoes, she would tell me "Mom, I hated those shoes, they are God awful" or
"They have to be the ugliest tennis shoes on earth" Now, my daughter is a shoe nut. She has shoes to match the color of the sunglasses she is wearing. But this with all the glass and debri littering the roadways, I decided I would not wear a pair of "good" shoes. Why ruin a nice pair of shoes, when I could wear my "ugly pair".
When we finally reached the store, we got to see neighbors and friends, and find out exactly what kind of damage our little town had suffered. The emergency management team had set up in the parking lot. So, we got a lot of information from the officals, and all kinds of people were gathering around. I was friends with the manager of the store, and I helped her sell food and diapers; especially water to people from all over the coastal area including my neighbors.
Without the air conditioners on, we were having to take breaks because of the heat. When it was my time for a break, I sat down and propped up against the store's window front, and a woman came by and asked could she sit. I said sure. She then told me her story. She and her family were at home riding out the storm when a tornado ripped through her home. People had given the kids clothes, and her husband a few things. I asked her what could I do for her, and she nothing, and that's when I looked down and saw she was barefoot. Her feet had been cutted and deep gashes from trying to fight her way out of the rumble of her home. I asked her what size shoe she wore, and God bless me that day, because she and I wore the same size.
I took off my "ugly" shoes, and handed them to her. She protested and said no. I told her I had a closet full of shoes, they were wet from the tree coming into my bedroom and losing the roof, but they would dry. She keep on saying she couldn't take the shoes off my feet, so I told her my daughter's feelings about the shoes I was trying desperatly to give her. She laughed, and said if it would make me happy. I told her not only would it make me happy, my daughter would be thrilled.
We washed her feet and got some bandaids from the store. She walked away from me telling everyone she seen that she was the proud owner of the "most beautifulest shoes" she had ever own. So, my compliment was I had once own those very beautifl shoes...they weren't ugly after all......
Thank you for letting me share my story.
God bless us all..................................

It was from my grandaughter. She said to me grandma you always look so nice. You don't dress in old, like most older people do. I thought that was so precious. I try not to dress like older people I like to be in style with the middle age people. I thought that was the nicest compliment coming from a child.

Was this past Christmas from my youngest daughter. When she said to me on Christmas Eve " Mom it meant alot to have you at home when we came home from school everyday. So many of our friends were latchkey kids. There you were always smiling when we got off the bus. Thank you for that." That made just being a MOM, well worth it !

My mother actually telling me what a great mom I am and that I made the right decision to stay home with my kids. She actually said she wished she'd been like that when we were kids. Scared the hell out of me, but it was wonderful!!
