NO, THEY'RE JUST TRYING TO LOOK THEIR BEST. MAYBE THEY HAVE SCARS OR SOMETHINGS THEY'RE TRYING TO COVER UP.

There is a huge group of ppl who do the actions you mentioned above repeatedly. This is the group I will address and, I don't know if they are so much "self-absorbed" as they are lacking in good self-esteem and at times maybe even suffering from compulsive-obsessive disorder. When a person globs on tons of makeup and is always checking mirrors for how they look many people see that as egoism. Usually it's the exact opposite. The individual does not feel worthy around others and is constantly checking, readjusting her appearance because she feels she has to do so just to measure up. Therefore these people tend to have VERY low self-esteem and/or obsessive personalities. They view themselves as "worthless" because they do not look like their favorite actress or they are not perfect and/or have no $$ to get plastic surgery. They always feel ugly and check the mirror repeatedly in order to keep their "ugliness" away from the outside world.

The opposite! The problem with too much makeup is that they are trying to hide behind a mask because they are afraid to show the world who they really are. Perhaps they are afraid of being rejected because they don't think they are good looking enough without the mask of makeup. These people have low self-esteem, lack self-confidance and really don't know themselves and basically have a fear of finding out. Not a good place to be.
Instead of self-absorbed, I think you meant self-conscious.

Some people like that look on themselves and don't know how to really do the subtle makeup look. I'm sure some people are self absorbed but some are also probably really insecure about they way they look so they pile it on to hide something, or try to.

Makeup is a form of self-expression. Some may in fact be self-absorbed but many are not.

Actually, its all personal preference, I know a really pretty girl that still looks pretty without make up but wears it anyway because she wants to. Shes definitely not self absorbed, really nice girl. I think shes just used to wearing make up, its almost like once you start wearing make up, you can only add more.

I've noticed some people get a compliment on a feature, lets say the eyes. Then they tend to go overboard emphasizing that feature with more attention and more eye makeup. Some have an artsy side that begs to play & experiment. Most people are simply unaware they look garish.

The more likely reason for too much makeup is insecurity. It's to cover up the flaws on the surface and in their psyche. Women in their 30s will start to wear less makeup.
Even less as they age. And eventually just lipstick in a soft shade (like my grandma).
As you mature, you know yourself and hopefully accept and become content with your identity which is SKIN DEEP.

I don't really think that they are self-absorbed, but I often wonder what the heck they are thinking!! Do they think that applying make-up with a putty knife is attractive? To each their own, I suppose!!

i think it depends on the person. some ppl r just trying to cover up stuff, and don't really know how to apply makeup well. but others (like shallow *popular* ppl) just pile it on and it looks reallllly bad. i kinda think they r self absorbed. ppl should just remember that less is more.
