It's not as easy as you think, because in order to get a judge to approve it you have to show cause, ie a reason why this must be done. Then, when and if it's approved, you've got to obtain new proof of identity with the MVD, the SS administration, birth certificate, passports, etc. Then you've got to update your information with every school you've attended, and think about all the accounts you might have opened with banks and video rental stores and grocery store clubs--it will soon be quite a nightmare. Nevermind explaining to family and friends why you're suddenly someone else.

Go to your local court house and get the required forms. They will give you the fee and procedures to follow. You pay the fee, file the name change and a judge will then approve. However, if you are changing the name of a minor, you will have to have both parent's consent.

It is legal to call yourself by any name you like --
-- no legal change is necessary --
-- as long as you are not using a false name to commit fraud or avoid paying taxes, etc.
