Measure the deepest part of the groove the e-clip is going to sit in with a micrometer. Then, check the inside diameter of the e-clip you want to use...it should be at or slightly smaller than the shaft size.

There is no set measurement. Instead look closely to verify that all 3 protrusions on inside of clip are in contact with and in the groove around the shaft it is to be placed on. They work by spring tension against the distortion caused when it is placed in the retainer groove. Think outside snap ring.
