After all, when you look closely at the bible - it's very ambiguous and doesn't really point out anything about homosexuality being a sin.

It says, "You shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination." But apparently abomination, in Hebrew, literally translates to "unclean" - and doesn't at all refer to sexual practices. Note as well: "lying with" does not = sex.

And then again, it says nothing about lesbianism *winks* - and outlaws "wearing glasses" and "having acne" as well as "a male having a haircut" in the same page. So, why don't we ban these things, too?

Hmmm...

I guess God only knows.

And we're not a theocracy anyway... so what _is_ the legal reason for the bans?

Sowing hate? Closeted homosexuality and consequent self-fear? A fear of not being able to **** certain women - and thus forcing them out of marrying other women? Chauvinism itself?

If anyone knows a real legal issue here, please, please, share it with me.

I'm just burning to know.

There isn't an actual "Legal" basis for the "ban". The laws of the United States are not now nor have ever been based on the Bible, nor should they be.
The very same arguments against Gays marrying were used to keep interracial marriage illegal.
The "democratic process" was not meant to decide issues of civil rights, actually just the opposite, the judiciary was set up so as to protect the minority from the tyrrany of the majority.
Reproduction is not required in any state to legally marry.
To deny a contract based only on the sex of those participating in that contract is discriminatory and illegal.
There has never been one piece of legislation proposed that would force Churches to perform any ceremony that opposes their theological viewpoint.

there are NO rational reasons to deny gays marriage, it existed within the ancient world among Greeks and Romans. Now at this point the Christo-nazis will say they were pagan, well guess what, last I checked religion was religion, different strokes for different folks. The truth is, just as Islam has forced nations to become theocracies so too is the US becoming a theocracy albeit a Christian one. There is no logic to the denial of gay marriage just the religious dogma which many people are brainwashed to believe without question. If look carefully, you will find a disproportionate number of people with lower intelligence and lower income are believers in Christianity than those who may believe but are not rigid in their faith. Truth is, it really is ignorance, nothing more. Sadly, Christians have no concept of the truth only what some very powerful politicians and preachers tell them. They literally can't think for themselves, it's beyond their capabilities, sad and quite pathetic really. I for one pity their lack of rational discourse, since quoting ancient scripture mistranslated over thousands of years seems to be the only argument they can put forward.

a_damsel_by_the_sea ,
This is a total issue, I know. But I hate it. It seems to me that it's all about a few things:
1) Somehow insurance companies woud feel a crunch, I have no proof but it would just be too real for that type of thing to occur.
2) Puritan sytle theological veiws that think that God has something against a piece of paper being held by two men, or two women, and the idea that this would further the degredation of children, not that the computer and television have anything to do with that.
3) Politicians are going to go where the money is in most cases. Right now, it's with those with Puritan type theological veiws.
4) If the USA has a spread of new muslims from Mexico, you can count on Gay persecution to be legislated into Law. I know that sounds far fetched, but they are having Islamic festivals in Mexico now. And you thought Christians are bad, wait until Mexico starts generating Muslims and then "migrating" in.

It is nothing more than religon. I have often heard the argument made that the Bible defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. While this may be true, it is not a valid argument as to why homosexual people should not be given the right to legally marry, and be given the same rights as a heterosexual couple. This nation was founded on the basic and deep concept of separation of church and state, and therefore we cannot let the way one religion's views of marriage define how our laws are written.

The issue is how the law determins a marriage. A Marriage is between a man and a woman, not two people of the same sex. So its not a ban per-say on gay marriage, its the deffinition of what contitutes a marriage. Its between a man and a woman. I'm quite happy with things the way they are, even allowing for common law recognition between same sex couples, and even health care for long term same sex couples. But don't think the legal deffinaition should be changed. My opinion

Religious thing. Pretty funny when you think about it. The powers that be are so worried about having the government seperate from religion, and yet, a huge issue is being controlled by just that thing. I'm not gay or religious, but which way will this end? The homosexuals will win.

There are no legal grounds. It is purely religious. Which religion is formed on a lie. It has been passed down through the years and has been given enough power that it has become the foundation of an delusional society.
Let's keep on breeding ignorance and delusion of what society should look like. Let's breed normal. So, what is normal?

It's all about people who think they have the right to judge others. I think its wrong for the law to step in and say gay marriages are NOT allowed. They have no right to even get involved as far as that is concerned.
If they aren't going to stop all people from getting married then they have no right to set laws for certain groups of people. It's legal for me to marry my husband cause im a women so people who want to marry people of the same sex should be allowed to do so.
I have a long line of Ministers/Priest that run in my family. While I dont go to church, I will say that the bible dont say nothing about gay's and lesbians are a sin or anything else. That comes from a long line of people reading more into the bible then what was said. People who don't like gay people so they will look for any excuse they find to allow to them outcast such groups like that.
They tell me the bible says it. I say grab a bible and prove it! I don't know what bible those people are reading cause it sure don't say it in any bible I have read. Besides dont God say NOT to judge others? Dont they say we are ALL god's children? How can they claim one thing and really mean another?
A marriage is a bond between two people whom love each other and wish to share their life together. Who are we to say two people can love each other but NEVER get married unless its to someone of the oppoiste sex? It's not like we are saying that everyone should have to marry people of the same sex, but if they wish to then that is their choice.
When people ask questions like your or any other questions in this nature what do they get for responces? So many people telling them its a sin and they should pray. So thats proof enough that says its all about the bible and not about laws. Actually its NOT about the bible but about the people who read too much into what is said in the bible.

I believe it is a religious issue. There is a verse in the new testament about men turning to men.
I don't think it should be a legal issue, I think if a person shares all of your life, they should be able to have the same benefits of an opposite sex spouse.
My personal opinion.

This question should really be in the law section. By placing it here, you're going to get biased answers and accusations of bigotry of gay people by the U.S. government. Calling the goverment homophobic is not a rational, or factual, answer.
