it's an '86 el camino w/ a 350 from a GMC 1 ton van in it. it's pretty fast, and will really burn the tires. but lately, if you suddenly floor it, it will hesitate real bad, and then kick in. and, if you do a burnout and let off the gas right away it will die...i was thinking fuel filter? it has a Holley 4 barrell carb. any other ideas on what it might be?

Yes I agree with teef, When you put you foot down on a cerebrated engine, the carb needs lots of fuel right now to meet the sudden air flow demand, so there is a little "pump" on the drivers side ft of the carb, as you quickly open the carb, It squirts a shot of fuel into the carb throat,
with the engine off, remove your air cleaner assembly and look down into the carb, open the throttle plates semi-quickly and watch for a steady shot of gas to squirt in the carb(just like a shot from a squirt-gun) If the stream Is not full and steady Its an easy repair, (only pump a few times before restart so as to not flood out the engine), also there is more then one hole on the pumps linkage arm so you can make the pump push more or less fuel when throttle opened, try moving it to the next hole to make the pump push the most...good luck, P.S. plugs wont change sh!t

Accelerator pump need a carb overhaul, but that just guessing over the net, need to test the vehicle properly could be a number of things, so your not just changing parts have it properly diagnosed, and stop burning the tires, you going to have major mechanical problems soon, and a carb kit wont fix it, plus when you get pulled over for pealling out as you say, that's called exhibiton of speed and is a thousand dollar fine and where I live they will take your car and crush it ,and your insurance will be canceled for future vehicles , so you need to Grow up and stay alive and the life's of other people, the main problem is the loose nut behind the wheel,be smart stay alive drive by the law

Quadrajet I'll bet. Typical for the period carb. Have carb cleaned or rebuilt.
