What do I need to look for here? This will be the first boat I have owned but I am experienced with smaller water craft.
I want a used model that has a small cabin (air conditioned would be nice) I live near a lake that has access to main rivers and would be using on week ends, will rent a slip on the lake to keep it. I want one that has been maintained but I am pretty good with a wrench too.
A friend said I needed a cuddy cabin crusier. I am hoping to find one I like in the low $20s lower would be better. My question is, is there real hope here or am I going to be finding junk in my price range?

SunFun is right! I had a Suntracker PartyBarge 24' with enough seats for 17 people legal on board. Paid 5K. It had a grille on the front for cooking, 125 HP Mercruiser outboard motor that was trouble-free and easy to reach for servicing. I did, however have (2) 6 gallon gas tanks to mix the fuel for.
You can get these pontoon boats with canvas covers that look like 10 X 10 rooms on board. Very nice and not expensive to buy or operate.
However, a cuddy cabin is cool, but very expensive. I've seen 20 year old boats like this go for 20K. You need to check prices on these. Go look on AutoTrader.com for BoatTrader listings. You should find good a deal this time of the year.
If you wait till spring, it will cost you more. Good Luck! ,

We bought a nice used 2000 suntracker pontoon boat 25 foot for $12000. It is our first boat and we are having a ball with it. We take it out on a huge lake about 20 miles from our house and we fish and sun. We have it moored in the marina up there. It does not have a cabin or a/c but we don't need it even when it is 107 out. You just jump in the water to cool off and it has a bimini top. The pontoon is great because there is so much room to roam around. Ours has a 175 hp engine too so it has great power even on a windy day. I do not know what state you are in but we are in Texas and there are lots of uncrowded lakes and lots of boats for sale here. We live on a little lake too but can only have non motorized boats on that one. So we get out in the canoe on it.

if you are only able to spend 20k on a boat then you are going to have to settle for something a little older such as an early 90's model or maybe even older. a good place to compare prices is to go to www.iboats.com or www.boattreader.com and that will give you some sort of idea of what to expect.

You should, with careful shopping, find something good in that price range.. Something in the 18 foot range.
