my girlfriend is a "registered" socialist/copmmunist and says that government open her mail before she gets it. is that legal? I'm in the US

Its supposed to be illegal, however this administration is making so that nothing is private anymore, including your phone calls, mail, and internet are all now being monitored. Thats what happens when you let a monkey run this country, they violate peoples rights....... and get away with it.
Don't worry they open my mail too, and I'm a military veteran ! They say its all in the name of Home Land Security ( because my husband is serving in the Army in Iraq) and its totally random, yet I'm the only one in my neighborhood that gets opened mail, to this day.......

If they have a warrant, but honestly they have a machine that can read the print on letters without opening them, just run the mail though the machine, and it figures the folded letters and then decides what the words are,
So by doing this they are not opening the mail.

You have to be careful. In Hong Kong, I believe, a Chinese citizen sent a memo to his friends in NY to tell them that the Chinese government has a policy to keep the commemoration of the Tiananmen Square as quiet as possible. Well, Yahoo, the email provider, helped the officials put the poor guy in prison labor for the next 20 years. They have the ability to read or retrieve your email messages if they need to.

Neddie's answer is right: only in certain circumstances can the mail be read. Assuming that you're not in jail, don't worry about it; mail is virtually never checked by the postal service.

How does she know who opens her mail? If the government wanted to open her mail without her knowing it, they have the technology to do that. Tell her to be careful because he CIA might be spying on her throught the filling in her teeth.

If it gets delivered to the guy down the street erroneously then why not the US government remember they are after terrorists and someone did see you out at that bar the other night being a real bad ***, drinking and carrying on like that, so who knows maybe you are a...................
