our car manufacturers and oil companies need to start investing in technology such as electric cars, cars that run off hydrogen, etc.

on a personal level, take public transportation and use your old bike when you can. learn to walk more often than taking the car and use power in the home more conservatively. everyone knows this but few follow. vote for politicians who have clear ideas about global warming and fossil fuel alternatives, like Al Gore.

Ethanol for now.
Sometime in the future I would like a vehicle that is powered by a small plutonium tablet with a half life of about 30 days.

Conservation is the key.
No one needs a big vehicle which used a disproportionate amount of petro-products to build (plastics, paint, etc) and which gets low mpg.
The price of gas (and the price of everything else made from petroleum, or transported) is going to go up, up, up. Eventually, when people feel the pain in their pocketbooks, they will decide to conserve.
Until then, it's conspicuous-consumption as usual.

Convert your car to run on alcohol or "bio-diesel" (basically used cooking oil)
It's not difficult, and there is a LOT of info on the net as to how to make your car run on these other fuels.
You can also learn how to distill your own alcohol for your car. If you live in feedlot country, you have lots of potential fuel sources for alcohol.

The technology that we have available to us, needs to be more streamlined and affordable for everyone that wants to be less dependent on oil. I do not take too kindly to the president telling me I am addicted to oil. Would he suggest we all stay home from work? Make it affordable to purchase alternative sources of energy.

fossil fuel is not scarce and there is debate as to how it was formed that is seriously challenging the establishment. How they think it has formed is a theory....
