i've always heard that not telling is the same as lying
so......?

Hey girly! mwuah! hmmm. good question. Sometimes, sometimes not. If you hold something back from someone when they need to know, then it's an untruth because it's NOT the truth, it's not anything. Is truth the opposite of a lie? Denying you have a secret when you do, denying what the secret is, all lies of course. Secrets sometimes need to be kept, and lying would be to say you'll keep a secret and then not keeping it. You could avoid lying by saying you can't keep a secret you know you can't, or saying, "I can't reveal that" when asked. I think in some circumstances, holding something back could be a lie. "Not the whole truth" is really just a way of justifying a lie to yourself or someone. "Where were you last night?" and answering, "with friends, hanging out and listening to music" is truth if you were at a party you weren't supposed to be at. But not telling the whole truth in that case ... possibly a lie. I'm not really sure. hmmmmhmmm. okay. well. I hope this and all the other answers give you some sort of help in deciding your own opinion.

Not even close to the same thing.
Suppose a friend of mine says, "Please don't tell anyone but I'm... " -so I don't tell anyone. That's a secret & not a lie unless someone asks me if that's the case & I deny it.
If I go around telling people that the opposite is true even though I know it isn't, that's a lie & not a secret.

no because a lie is an untruth where as a secret is a statement being kept from someone, usually is a fact. that being said a secret can be a lie and a lie can be a secret.

Not necessarily. It is if you're trying to keep something from someone, especailly if they've been asking you about it. If you just have a little secret of your own that you don't really want people to know, it's not a lie I dont think.
