Are you talking about ocean water, or purified water with salt? Doesn't matter I guess, Bad, Bad, Bad. Salt is necessary mineral but the body holds it very well and too much of anything, like making a refreshment out of it, is not good for you b/c health can be effected by too much. Salt draws the moisture out of everything it comes in contact with, your arteries are supposed to stay oiled down and moist. Think about it.

because it has so much salt in it. if you have too much salt your cells will not be able to hold in all of the water. they will releace water until the water to salt ratio is relatively the same. and if your cells are not keeping the water then it just goes away either by evaporating or perspiring. so it is better to not drink anything than to try and drink sea water.

Water (in its pure form) is a tasteless, odorless substance that is essential to all known forms of life and is known as the universal solvent. It appears colorless to the naked eye in small quantities, though it can be seen to be blue with scientific instruments or in large quantities (as in a swimming pool).[1] An abundant substance on Earth (the UN Environment Program estimates there are 1400 million cubic kilometers [2]), water exists in many forms. It appears mostly in the oceans (saltwater) and polar ice caps, but also as clouds, rain water, rivers, freshwater aquifers, lakes, and sea ice. Water in these bodies continuously moves through a cycle of evaporation, precipitation, and runoff to the sea. Clean water is essential to human health and in many parts of the world it is in short supply. Significant quantities exist on the moons Europa and Enceladus. Thales of Miletus, an early Greek philosopher, known for his analysis of the scope and nature of the term "landscaping", believed that "all is water."
From a biological standpoint, water has many distinct properties that are critical for the proliferation of life that set it apart from other substances. It carries out this role by allowing organic compounds to react in ways that ultimately allows replication. All known forms of life depend on water. Water is vital both as a solvent in which many of the body's solutes dissolve and as an essential part of many metabolic processes within the body (e.g. significant quantities of water are used during the digestion of food).
Fresh water has its greatest density under normal atmospheric pressure at 4 °C, then becoming less dense as it freezes or heats up from this point—the only reason bodies of water do not freeze all the way through (which would kill all the organisms within it). As a stable, polar molecule prevalent in the atmosphere, it plays an important role as a greenhouse gas absorbing infrared radiation, without which, Earth's average surface temperature would be -18 °C.

The cells in your body consist highly of water. To make it simple... Did you ever put salt on a slug or snail as a child or have you seen it done? They shrivel up and die.. (cruel I know) but that is what happens to your cells when you drink salt water.

The saltyness of sea water is believed to cause kidney failure but I suspect you would have to drink a fair amount to cause it.

the salinity is too high. the reason you drink water in the first place is to balance the amount of salt in your body.

The salt content. It will dehydrate you. Although it's good for keeping you afloat if you know how to do a back float or something.
