You only need one for that slot, but you need to get the info on your system before you get that RAM. I get my RAM at Coast to Coast Memory, and the prices are very reasonable, even cheap. Look up your system on the website I have listed below, and it will tell you which one to buy. I have 3 Dells here at home, so you should be okay.

I have a Dell 450.
Make sure you upgrade your BIOS because your board only supports 384.
Once your BIOS is upgraded, buy a 256 MB PC100 stick (they are becoming rare and expensive). Add that to slot 1. Make sure it works. If it does, add the rest and you have 512.

Placing another stick of 256mb ram should be fine as long as it is not a dual channel board, which by what you mention it's not because you only have one stick of ram in it at the moment. Also get Cacheman. Its a free program available on the internet with automatic presets which will increase you whole system performance around 10%.

Just get the EXACT same type RAM as you have now. If there are no markings on your current stick of RAM go to crucial.com and see what they recommend for your computer, then buy that from newegg.com or tigerdirect.com.

no, it is not required to buy the same pairs of ram. However, while buying make sure that the frequency and latencies are the same

Actually, some motherboards require a pair. My previous computer did, as does this one.
Find out what motherboard you have and check its requirements before making your purchase.

you do not have to buy in pairs, the only time to buy in pairs if you plan on running in dual channel, just make sure the new one you buy has a compatible fsb with your motherboard

You can just add one. Just make sure it matches the specs of the existing one.
