Republican - A member of the Republican Party, also known as the Grand Old Party (GOP). Republicans tend to believe in individualism, small government, and entrepreneurship. Ideologies within the Republican label include, but are not limited to, paleoconservatives, neoconservatives, social conservatives, libertarians, fiscal conservatives, and moderates.

Democrat - A member of the Democratic Party. Democrats tend to believe in civil liberties, social freedoms, and equal rights. Ideologies under the Democratic label include, but are not limited to, progressives, labor democrats, libertarians, and moderates.

Often times it is difficult to define the position of the party because we try to define the position based on that of one of its members; the problem is that the party members have a mixed bag of ideologies. Many people will join the party along one or two of its positions rather than holding a perfectly aligned ideology. This may be why you can find libertarians wearing both a Republican and Democratic hat; they align better with Democrats on social issues and Republicans on economic issues.

They are the two major (out of several total) political parties.

Both currently favor large federal government, and high spending. Republicans achieve that with deficit spending. Democrats prefer higher taxes. Republicans use the large govt to enforce conservative social agendas, while Democrats use the large govt to pay for welfare and other govt-sponsored social subsidies.

Republicans tend toward the conservative end of the philosophical spectrum. Until a few decades ago, Republicans were run by fiscal conservatives, who want small govt. More recently neo-conservatives (neo-cons) abandoned the small govt model, but kept the conservative social agenda.

In sum, the conservative social agenda opposes change, and tries to force things to conform to "traditional values". In practice, those "traditional" values are primarily Christian religious doctrines.

The Democrats favor social programs and broad civil liberties to help people, sometimes going to the extreme in providing unlimited welfare and other subsidies. Democrats originally followed a liberal or progressive agenda, advocating liberty and diversity. However, also in recent years, many liberals who oppose the unchecked spending have left the Democratic party.

Many of the ex-Republican conservatives and ex-Democrat liberals have found common ground in the Libertarian party, which unlike either the Republicans or Democrats favors small federal government, low taxes and no deficit spending.

The Republicans want you to care for yourselves , they don't believe in government handouts . They are for bigger business , less taxes ,.
The Democrats want to take care of everyone and you have to pay for it with taxes . You can depend on them for help . They are for smaller business and more for the American People then Government . There are many degrees between them and yet sometimes they are more alike then they know .
You would think they would work together to keep this country strong , instead of the constant bickering between them . We have a two party system and they need to get along to fight our common enemies
