x-2y=5
-3x+2y=7
Multiply the first one by 3:
3x-6y=15
-3x+2y=7
The 3x and -3x cancel out:
-6y=15
2y=7
Now, combine the equations:
-4y=22
Divide each side by negative 4:
y= -5.5

Now, plug that into one of the original equations:
3x-6y=15
3x-6(-5.5)=15
3x+33=15
Subtract the 33 from both sides:
3x= -18
Divide both sides by 3:
x= -6

Now, check with the other original equation:
-3x+2y=7
-3(-6)+2(-5.5)=7
18+ (-11) =7
7=7

ANSWERS
x= -6
y= -5.5

This seems simple enough. First take one of the equations and solve for one of the variables. Such as:
x = 5 + 2y or y = (5 - x)/2
next plug one of these equations into the second equation and solve for the variable. Like this:
-3(5+2y) + 2y = 7
-15 -6y +2y = 7
-4y = 22
y = -5.5
now that you know what y is you can solve for x. Then plug each value for x and y into each equation to check if your right.
x-2(-5.5) = 5
x = -6
Check:
-6 - [2(-5.5)] = 5....true
-3(-6) +2(-5.5) = 7....true

x-2y=5

isolate x: x=5+2y

plug x into the 2nd equation

-3(5+2y)+2y = 7

solve y

-15-6y+2y = 7
-15-4y=7
y=-(7+15)/4
y=-22/4

plug y=-22/4 into first equation and solve for x

x-2(-22/4)=5

x+(44/4) = 5

x=5-11

x = -6

in short, x = -6 and y = -22/4

check your work.....

plug the solved x and y into the second equation....

(-6) - 2(-22/4) = 5 ??
-6+(44/4) = 5
-6 + 11 = 5 YES...

solve the top for x. then use substitution and plug the x value into the second equation to find y. after finding y plug the value into origional equation to find x
x-2y=5
-3x+2y=7

x=2y+5
-3x+2y=7

-3(2y+5)+2y=7

-6y-15+2y=7

-4y=22

y=-5.5
plug y into first equation
x-2(-5.5)=5

x+11=5

x=-6

(-6,-5.5)
