I would recommend asking a veterinary school that does animal necropsies to save one for you. It probably wouldn't take very long before they would come across a dog that either expired from heartworm, or died from another cause that had worms.

Alternatively, Google for "heartworm expert," and find a DVM or PhD that you can contact and see what they suggest.

Almost every dog in the southern US not on heartworm medicine will get infected. Any veterinary school or practice in the South should be able to get you one from an unadoptable shelter animal that has been euthanized, for next to nothing.

The animal hospital I used to work at had very realistic looking plastic hearts sectioned open to show the worms inside the chambers and vessels. We got ours straight from the Heartgard company as an advertising device. Might be more palatable for your waiting room than the real thing!

check with your local vet hospitals and/or schools if there is any in your area. the clinic that I used to work at kept one on hand to show to clients... maybe someone around you will have one too. if not you could find somewhere around you that does animal necropsy and get one from them.

From a dead dog?

Seriously, check your local vet hospitals and explain clearly why you would want such a thing.
