In a world with growing problems of increasing urgency are people using some form of adaptive ignorance to contunue with their lives as though nothing could be done. Is this kind of attitude exactly why things get so bad?

Of course there is - it can be seen in the actions and beliefs of the creationists. Each scientific discovery that adds to the overwhelming collection of evidence for evolution is met with yet another idiotic attempt to counter it with illogical statements, quotes from that book of super science, the bible and deliberate misquotation of comments made by scientists..
