Its kinda reidcilous me saying this as I've been taught for how ever long, but I'd suggest: 1) LEARN NEW STUFF - heard of modes? learn your scales and teach yourself new chords - dim7th? add9's? Learn a load of jazz chords. Play around with this stuff 2)GET A GRADE BOOK - even if you don't intend on doing them (although Never say never!). A lot of the time they improve your technique and teach you how to sweep, tap, use a whammy, even how to pick better! So what if they're horrendous tunes! Check out the Guitar Encounters yamaha series - they're based on lessons, but you could just jam through the tunes and exercises and stuff - they even base the stuff on real tunes! 3)WRITE YOUR OWN MATERIAL - acoustic guitar's all about jamming to chords. Play around. Hell, if you even are good enough record yourself and post it on the net. People will watch and comment - ok, sometimes mean stuff, but often amazing stuff - you'll be soo pleased! 4)PUSH YOURSELF TO DO NEW STUFF - An hour a day - I've been playing for 11 years and don't do that, and I'm darn good (not being vain or anything...). But test yourself. If you can play electris, check out YYZ by rush. it seems hard, but aint so. Check out some RHCP for acoustic. Listen to some jazz, like blue bossa. Challenge yourself to tunes you may think that are impossible - sometimes they are, but you'll be suprised. 5) JOIN A BAND/ENSEMBLE/DUO - know any good singers - they always like duo-ing with a good guitarist...well, even if you can jam a few chords they'll enjoy it. See if you can form a band - watch Scott Pilgrim vs the world - that'll inspire you! Trust me - band situations are great and most importantly... 6)STOP FRETTING (if you'll pardon the pun...) - you'll be fine. and who knows, in a week of reading this advice you may become some hendrix or evh! (you can tell Im more an electric guitarist). Hope this helps! -BT ---EDIT--- woah! I wrote alot! ;)

That depends on how good you want to be, how much you practice, and what style of music you want to play.

To learn to play simple greenday, or jack johnson songs is much easier that learning to play metallica or guns and roses.

And if you don't practice and devote time to it you'll never get better.

I tought myself the basics of guitar. In about 5 months I could play simple songs. I've been playing for 4 years now, and I'm a much better guitarist, but I still have a long way to go before I'd consider my self a master.

I recomend getting alist of 6 songs you like and learning how to play them. and if you ever want to be able to write your own songs learn at least the basics of music theory.

it took me a while, it takes alot of patience. Before you even think aobut learning chords, i STRONGLY Suggest starting out with the basic notes. the Hal Leonard Guitar Method is a GREAT book. Thats what i used and i LOVED IT. It's a series of three books, book 1, 2, and 3. Of course, start out with book 1 and work your way up. Trust me, using Hal Leonard first makes it a whole lot easier.

Forget programs & just dive right in. The Beatles never used any computer programs & look what they did....

Learn the basic major & minor chords, learn some easy songs, have friends show you stuff along the way, get yrself a song book of stuff you'd like to play & enjoy yrself!

Hey! I taught myself...I am a fast learner and just to learn the basic strings and all, it took me about a week to master them. My advice would be to make sure you're teaching yourself right...buy a book on it. Good luck!
