What kind of a car?
Some only come on when there is a hydraulic problem in the brake system.
Others will come on for that, as well as if there is a low level of brake fluid in the master cylinder.
Some cars have sensors attached to the brake pads that tell you when the pads are due to be replaced.
Start there; check the master cylinder, if it is low, add A LITTLE; do not top it off.
If you top it off, when the brakes are relined, brake fluid will be sprayed all over the engine compartment.
This is also a good indication that your front pads are due for replacement.
If the brake light is amber, or if it says "ANTI-LOCK", the computer has identified a problem with the anti-lock circuit(s) and has disabled that system, though the brakes themselves are fine.
Good Luck

The year and make would be very helpful here. But here is something that nobody thought of: Is it a light indicating that one of the tail lights are out? I remember a friend of mine had a '94 Camry that had an indicator light just for the taillights. It would come on if one of the bulbs was burned out. Just a possibility. But if it is the light for the system then by all means get them checked out by a competent mechanic. A brake system problem is something that should not be taken lightly.

Take your foot off the brake pedal. Or find a mechanic cos you have an electrical fault.

well it could mean you need fluid in tha master cylinder or it could mean the park brake is on or possibly the brakes need replacing
to gewt it off you need to check these things if it is out of fluid you will need to bleed the brakes once the fluid is replaced good luck
