Does anyone know of any American myths or legends? Or do you have a source? An example would be Santa Claus(sorry for all of you who believe in him. I hope I don't offend.) I know this is MY homework, and I shouldn't be asking for help, but I just can't find this anywhere. It's not that I'm lazy. Please help?! Thank you in advance!

there is a legend amoung truck drivers in america that if they get greedy and try to stay up late and get more runs in that the black dog will come for them and they'll have a wreck. many truck drivers claim that they have at some point seen the black dog and had a wreck right after seeing him and most admit it was when they wer trying to get more money by making more runs.
in florida there is the seminole legend about standing at a certain place and seeing the seminole indian. there are usually myths and legends surrounding most old building places and 90% of big colledges. Auburn has the legend of the war eagle which is how they got their 2nd mascot the golden eagle. there are lots of american indian tales or myths if you look in your local library you could probabbly find myths and legends about your area or even town. most librarys have a section on myths and legends and there is a series of books called myths and legends usually followed by of the mountains or of the plain states or of a certain state name. hope this helps the legend of the black dog would be reasearched further by chatting with truckers or maybe the movie patrick swayzee was in called balck dog the movie doesnt go into the legend but the web site may. try doing a search engine on myths and legend it may take some legwork but your bound to find it people are always writing gbooks on legends and myths cause most are handed down through out the history of certain areas. Also your urban legends though if this is a class project it wont be very origninal because half the class is probably gonna do that. Good luck though sounds like a fun assignment!

Don't apologize for asking for help. It's not like you're cutting and pasting your math book on here like I've seen some do.
american myths? you have some good examples, but you will have to look them up to get the accurate info and what the reason was behind the myths. just google those names and start looking at sites.
Oh, btw, the Washington myth was he chopped down a cherry tree, not an apple tree and it was to illustrate his honest character.
good luck

Teachers sometimes ask this question to give themselves a feeling of superiority. Take an american role model, such as George Washington, and things that make him a great role model, and then find an example to show that the things people admire about him are not always true. By destroying the concept of heroism, they conform to the backwards non-goals of modern education. Such intellectual pursuits are meant to "dumb down" america, that is, to make yourself seem smarter by bringing everyone down to your level, rather than by elevating yourself. in the end, we are all as stupid as one another. what a "feel-good" concept that is!

hey, what about the myth of the friendly pilgrims who were nice to the natives, and wore buckle shoes?
Just think of your first grade class around thanksgiving- the whole thing is historically inaccurate, but it makes us feel better about our noble forefathers.
