Cause NOT all kids are the same and trying to force kids to learn in the same ways dont work. Not many people take the time to work with the kids that have behavior problems and other issues at home or wherever. If you see a kid that hates school and don't go what does our system do? It either lets them fall their the cracks and go uneducated or they punish them and let them go on doing the same thing. What they should be doing is taking the time to see why it is each of those children hate school and aren't going to school, then work on correcting those problems.
You got to learn to see things from their points of view and not just yours. There is always a deeper meaning behind " I hate school and dont want to go". We just assume to many times that the child is lazy and nothing is going to work. We don't take the time to show them there are more then one "good" way to do things in life.
They don't always have the right people in their liefs to help guide them in the right directions. There are lots of people out there who dont have to work for a thing in their life their parents make it too easy for them. They are handed money to spend carelessly and their parents pay for them to go to Harvard and they dont even appreciate it. Most students got to work extra hard to achieve that. They see time and time again where hard work dont always pay off so they give up.

Some kids go to Harvard and to rehab.
Drug addictions don't know social status. Anyone can find they have a problem. Unfortunately, one person may not have the same resources available as another person. This can occur in terms of resources available so they don't find themselves in trouble in the first place, or those having resources available to get them out of trouble once they are sitting in it.
Money isn't everything either. Some kids who have everything still make a point of screwing up despite the silver spoon.

I'll tell you this much.. My juvie record got expunged when I turned eighteen. I dropped out of school. Worked some dead end jobs, followed down the wrong path for many years of my life.. Then I decided to go to college. (could never afford Harvard) I get just about all A's.. though I could still be considered a big candidate for rehab. (not alcohol or weed) Life is strange, huh? It's the choices a person makes.. and most times, they are aware of the consequences.

What about the kids who go to Harvard, get scholarships, AND do all those other negative things you described?
You think in terms of opposites. In real life, positive and negative things happen to EVERYBODY, including people with degrees from Harvard and scholarships.

Ah, the old question: nature or nurture? Environment or heredity.?
My guess is that being born into a rich family will at least keep you from having a criminal record, if not out of rehab.

Well, the Harvard kids just don't admit they have a problem. They all end up at Betty Ford eventually.

Because for the human race to survive, diversity in life choices is imperative.
Same reason why some druglords live in penthouses, while some honest working suckers live in slums.
