Oh come on - that's like asking why there are Catholic colleges, women's colleges, business colleges, or colleges that specialize in math, science and technology (i.e. - M.I.T.). The answer is simple: HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), like Catholic colleges, women's colleges, etc. are better at filling the specific needs (socially and culturally, as well as academically) of its students than regular colleges and universities. And FYI, while HBCUs started out as all Black colleges and universities due to segregation laws, nowadays they're not as exclusive as you're implying. Other minorities, such as Latinos and Asians as well as some Whites attend these colleges too.

And organizations like the NAACP are still relevant today for much the very same reason - they cater to the specific social, cultural and political needs of minorities. While this may be the year 2006, discrimination and racism against people of color are still part of today's society. Only the ignorant and naive believe that racism is a thing of the past.

This may be the year 2006 but equality has not arrived yet. Blacks make less money, they are convicted of crimes more often, they are elected less often and on and on. If you look at the numbers it is very clear that equality is not here and the blacks are still at a disadvantage. And the problem is that the problem perpetuates itself. The black children don't have as many good role models. They don't have parents who can afford to give them a good education (as often). And so the next generation follows in the footsteps of the last. The idea is that affirmative action can allow us to break out of this cycle. Because blacks are a minority, it is OK to have an organization like the NAACP. A minority needs special places and organizations where they can get together and support each other. A majority, such as the whites in this country does not need such an organization. Most whites are around mostly whites most of the time. So if they formed a 'white only' club, it would be excluding a few people. The black organizations allow blacks to be around other blacks which is a much more rare occurence. So, in summary, it is OK for a minority to form a specialized group, but not a majority. A group of single custodial fathers would not be a sexist group. But a group of male CEOS would be sexist.

Well as a Black person, I would say that despite the belief of so many in this country, there is still a lot of institutional racism going on in this country. i wont go into the official definition of the term. but u can learn more about it in books such as "racism" by george frederickson and "majority and minority" by Norman Yetman. also, think about this, the average private university is majority white. so is that any different really than a historically black college? not really. I personally go to a predominantly white university, Boston Univ., but I see nothing wrong with a Black person choosing to be amongst other Black people at a Black college. It's not as if White people dont attend those schools. Because they do, if only in small numbers.

Some people are still racist and don't like to mix with other colors and races, I guess.
