...probably some sort of mismatch w/transformer?? Seems to last for a while before the internal plastic 'clapper' ends up getting stuck and melting somewhat. What do I need to look for, either with replacement bell or on transformer, to select correct parts?

Doorbell buttons sometimes stick in the "pushed" position. This causes the solenoid to stay energized and get REAL hot!!! Replace the button. Since you've done this much work, the parts may not be compatible. I suggest replacing the entire system.

Remember: a door bell system can burn your house down.

At the outside: Bell push presses but doesn t spring back out.
At the chime box: Dings but doesn t Dong
Solenoid still activated, and it s coil overheats. Strong smell of shellac.
At the transformer: Overheating.

Marvin s right...cheap doorbells can start a fire!

Have you checked the doorbell buttons, if they stick in the pushed in the on postion that could cause your chime to over heat. Most Doorbell chimes come with a transformer when you buy them so I doubt it would it would be the problem. I am a electrician, feel free to email me thru yahoo if you want.

You may need to eliminate it entirely, at least at that location.
