i recieved an email from someone i know through their hotmail account, said she was in a certain country, but when i checked ip address it said she was in her home country when email sent... how can that be?

she sends it through her hotmail account.would it just show ip address of where hotmail account was set up from? she does not know much about computors,

If she's using webmail, how would you know where she was by the IP address. It should be reporting the IP address of the web server that's hosting the webmail.

I've never tested that theory, but I can't imagine why it would be any different.

Email ip addresses can be deliberately re- routed, many times. There is software that can trace moving addresses if you are "live ".
If the person is very computer literate thay can re-route the address.
If your friend is not, then -- was the address a server like hotmail that is located somewhere else?

Chances are they are where the IP says they are. Unless they are using a VPN or Hide IP Application / Website.
