Download this software. AVG is one of the most up-to-date virus protection software and this version is free! It will tell you if it is a virus. The site also has removal tools.
But it sounds like to me it might be your battery. Do you have problems with the clock on your computer? Does it seem to always re-setting or incorrect? On Win 98 that seems to happen quite often. Well to replace the battery open your pc case and the battery looks like a large watch battery. Take it to radio shack or best buy and get a replacement.
If you don't have adaware I'd get it too! http://www.lavasoft.com/. Just remember if you have spyware or a virus, always disconnect from the internet before removing. Files that are active on your pc sometimes won't delete if they are in use. Another suggestion is to open msconfig (start, run, msconfig) and close any programs running that shouldn't be. See the following list http://www.greatis.com/appdata/index.html

I'm wondering if you have a worm in your system. I had Windows98 on my last computer, and I got a worm that was spreading across the country like crazy. My computer would also shut down and then restart automatically, and I kept losing all the papers I was writing! I remember that I got a patch to fix it on the microsoft website. I would check there and search under the section for windows98. Good luck!

It could be due to overheating. Check that all your fans are working, and ensure they are not being blocked by anything. Open up the case and clear all the dust from the fans and heatsinks. Also make sure your computer is not near a heat source, like a radiator.

Do you have updated antivirus protection? You could have a quirk in your system or a virus or worm, that is usually a sign. But it could be a internal problem as well so run your antivirus and see what it detects.
