Well, for many years Intel has dominated the market of processors like its "Pentium" brand. Recently AMD has come out with it's AMD64 processor series, running on 64 bits, that is generally much faster in the execution of applications than any of the Intel processors. Intel losing their "edge" on the market quickly tried to counter the new AMD64 by sending out it's Core 2series that include "dual-core"(desktops) and "duo"(laptops) processors. These boast of two processors working at once that allow applications to run "twice" as fast. AMD64 is still the fastest "single" processor unit, while Intel has yet to match an AMD in a fair fight. Intel had to put 2 processors together to beat AMD. AMD is a serious threat to Intel because of it's high standing among gamers.

Depends on what you want to do with the computer. For gaming AMD has a slight advantage.
For very complicated math coprocessor problems Intel is better.
If you are just after an average home machine AMD is usually slightly cheaper for very similar performance but for some unknown reason seems to be slightly less reliable

The companies go back and forth as the years go by they both get a edge over the other with their latest processors. AMD recently bought out ATI and in I think 2008 ATI will be completely revamped. So who knows whats gona come up.

We use intel at work because of a higer level of reliability ad compatibility. You can moralize all you want about intel and M$ being in bed together but at the end of the day we reap the rewards with very reliable and stable machines. (I am a network admin)
A lot of home gamers do prefer AMD because their processors do work slightly harder at paying games. I wouldn't know I don't play games. AMD is also slightly cheaper for the same performance as Intel.
Hope this helps.

the differences are slowly fading between the 2. AMDs used to be more popular among gamers because they supposedly ran 3D games a little better. i'm not so sure if they really do.
i recently looked up benchmark scores on http://3DMark.com and the highest scores were coming from people with Intel Core Duo chips.

Intel is heavily supported by most major U.S. computer manufacturers, AMD -- not so much. Other than that, they are basically the same. But to most people, brand names do matter and Intel is the more popular of the two.

Basic functions are pretty much the same. Gamers prefer AMD's because they tend to run cooler under high usage.
