I'm always so nervous I can barely blow into my instrument...

remember that they are just people like you too. and probably just as nervous to be in the judging seat.
pretend they are there to praise you.

nervousness effects everybody, even the bands that have been going around for years get stage-fright. I used to get it too, I stopped performing on stage so that I don't get it anymore.

1. Let all your nervousness out before hand, freak out for a good hour before the show. By the time you get on the stage you're completely calm and able to perform well. I tried this a few times, definitely worked for me.

2. The same old trick of imagining people in their underwear. Though I suggest doing this -before- you go on because giggling while trying to work on your instrument probably wouldn't end well with people.

3. Imagine them all as your friends and you just want to show off, it's a lot more fun to perform when you make a game out of it. I've done this too, when it's a big night and I want to do the best I always have my own private competition with the people around me.

4. Make sure you know your part very well before you go on stage. Even if that means practicing it while at home without your instructor. I had this problem where I just couldn't get this song down with some hand held bells, there's nothing more embarrassing then the conducter having to point you out especially to make sure you got the bell to go on time. So make sure you practice, that'll kill a lot of butterflies when you know you know the piece well.

YES! One month is PLENTY of time!! Go to the room or concert hall you'll be performing in and recruit different friends each time, the same amount as there are judges, and ask them to take th 5 minutes for you to do your piece. The very best way to get over stage fright is to perform frequently. Since you can't compete 12 times before this competition, set up fake ones. It'll be similar, because even though your friends can't judge you in a professional critical way that judges can, they CAN judge you as a peer. Best of luck. Remember, repeated exposure to anything diminishes your perceived apprehension, which means do it a lot and you won't be so shaky :)

Each time you practice do it before a mirror, alternate with practice sessions with a good friend, who will blow your technique to smithereens and yet get you into a positive mode to improve each time. But above all practice every day before you get in front of the judges, the only reason you are nervous is because they will find out the flaws, avoid that...

Practice, practice, practice. Get anyone you can to watch you--parents, friends, stuffed animals, yourself in the mirror........your fright is only in your imagination, so get yourself geared up that those watching are "judges."

Before the performance, take some slow calming breaths and realize EVERYONE gets nervous at stuff like that, and it's NORMAL. Maybe that will help you put things in perspective.

You are thinking of the results instead of what you are doing. Many of the best people get stage fright, every night. Some get over it, and just put themselves in to the moment.

The way to overcome stage fright is to go out there and do what you have to do enough times that you get used to it. Maybe you can work your way up to it by practicing with less threatening audiences. Start with your dog and work your way up.

Play in front of other people that you don't know as much as possible. Make it fun and rewarding. Go to a mall with some musically inclined friends, and play together. Set out your case and try to make some money. Go to the park and do the same. Play for your friends, family, anyone that'll listen. Performing takes just as much practice as playing. Don't worry though, you'll get used to it.
