Restrict the motion of the egg in the centre of the box. A nice strong tube is recommended; try a large model rocket body tube, available at your local hobby shop. They are dense and very strong, and they can fit an egg (to make 'egg-lofter' rockets, but that's another story).

Anyhow, fit the tube right in the centre. Place cardboard baffles with holes in the middle to keep the tube centred.

Fill most of the tube with compressible foam THAT DOES NOT BOUNCE BACK!!! Some foam rubber will project your egg against the side of the box with the whole momentum of the box. This is Not Good.

I would think a great material would be the foam from a bicycle helmet. Get one that's been dinged a bit and needs replacement. Cut chunks or shavings of the foam into a baggie (clean up after!) and use that as a cushion to stop the egg.

Ideally, the egg will travel across the box and stop just as the box does.

Good luck! Let me know how you do.

A little box with that egg crate cushion that some people put on their beds. Do they still make those connector toys that have the wooden circles and sticks? Maybe you can make a case out of it rubberbands, and packing materials.

If I were you, before I went to school and did this for a test, I would buy a dozen eggs and try all the ideas that people list on here.

Try protecting the egg the same way that you protect your brain. Encase the egg in a gel (gelatin will do) and an outer shell to keep the gel in. The gel will dissipate energy from impact and distribute the force over the surface of the egg. Good luck.

Yeah. I did this one. Use plastic bags. Lots of plastic bags and some packaging peanuts. It won't win the speed contest, but it won't break.
