ok, I scanned my pc for viruses using bitdefender and it found something in my outlook express. This is what it found:

WINDOWS\Application Data\Identites\{AA638A-3252-11EC-8694-A637EB7DDF6C}Microsoft\Outlook Express\Deleted Items.dbx=>[Subject: Open vacancy: Perfect offer][Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2006 09:59:16+0200]=>(MIME part)=>au.exe

Bitdefender could not fix it.

any ideas as to what it is and does and how to fix it would be appreciated.

This looks like bitdefender is reporting an attachment on an email that has been deleted as infected. Go into outlook express (all windows accounts if multiple windows and mail identities) and empty the deleted items folder and try your scan again.

Yes, Sybot and awaware. lavasoft.com for the adaware and download.com for the spybot. Once you install them, before running any of these programs, just click on check for updates athen run the program. It is the best programs out there or malware, and it is free. P.S. if you had Norton, it would have found it and quarantined it right off the bat. No, the Norton I use is not free. I don't trust free virus protection, they can only do so much.

I use Nortons so I went to the Symantec website and found a manual removal solution. However, you really need something with more muscle than you are using my friend. The suggestions you got previously are sound ones and you should heed the advice.
I also recommend that you consider using HiJackThis. I know the name sounds ominous but it is one of the best tools out there and its freeware.
The web address for the manual solution from Symantec is:
http://searchg.symantec.com/search?q=au.exe&context=gbh&src=gbh&output=xml_no_dtd&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&client=symc_en_US&proxystylesheet=symc_en_US&site=symc_en_US

Copy and paste the entire sha-bang into the web address bar. Good luck.

hi, perhaps you can try norton to remove the virus and protect your PC, but you need to pay for the software.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can disable all virus to run, because the virus can only run on IE.

besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.

firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.

download firefox for free:

You have an infected e mail that is saved. Go and find the mail on the stated date and subject and delete it. Do not open it!

Try Spybot Search and Destroy, or Try Adaware SE.

Those 2 programs are free, and they are by far the best two spyware/malware killers i have ever used.

Ad-Aware SE: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Spybot Search and Destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
