TEXT from the movie SHALL WE DANCE?

- All these promises that we make and we can break. Why is it, do you think, that people get married, why do people get married?
- For passion.
- No
- That is interesting. Because i would’ve taken you for a romantic. Why then?
- Because we need a witness to our lives. There is a billion people on the planet. I mean. What does anyones life really mean? But in a marriage you are promising to care about everything – the good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things. All of it. All of the time. Every day. You are saying “your life will not go unnoticed, because I will notice it”. “Your life wont go unwitnessed, because I will be your witness.”. You can quote me on that if you like.
- I am sure I will. I was right. You’re a romantic.

I think it is just right. People get married cause they want a witness to their lives, so that they wont live unnoticed, but they will feel important to someone. Do you agree?

that could be why the divorce rate is so high. maybe more things need to go unnoticed. all that stuff is great in the beginning when your lovestruck. after a while it seems you just notice too much. i guess either way, your not forgotten.

a alot of people get married to save money on insurrance and get good deals, and money. they get married so they can say they are married. they get married because they think that if they are married their relationship will work for sure. they get married because they are old fashioned. they get married because of their religion. they get married to get out of the awful house they may live in with their parents. there are lots of reasons. but I dont know about your so their life wont go unnoticed thing I think that is bull. but you never know some one might feel that way.

I don't entirely agree. You shouldn't marry someone to be a witness to your life; you have your mother and father and siblings and friends for that. You should marry someone for love and affection, to make you whole, to help support you in any means, for when you're sick to care for you, and to stick by your side even in the toughest times.

Interesting. I agree to a point, but it's nice to have someone to share it all with not as a witness, but as a partner, doing it all together and learning together.
