Well, under certain circumstances it is legal, and in certain countries it is legal too.

But I understand what is it that you are referring to, and the answer is simple, and sad. It is illegal because being this way it is a terrific business. If it was to be legalized it would most certainly sell at a fraction of what it is sold today.

Illegal drugs finance some incredible things, and hypocritical governments use them to fund illegal movements.

because of THE MAN. Na, really cuz back in the day -like when george washington was growing it, tobacco became popular and so there were thousands of fields made and then after that the pharmaceutical companies came out and the more money they can make the better. If marijauana was legal and we could grow it and sell it and tax it and use it to build houses and ropes and paper and gas and clothes etc....then you'd put all the tobacco profitting people out to graze. But the idea the government wants to give you saying its dangerous and all those dont use drug commercials are crap. The only thing marijuana really influences is taco bell, and maybe some chocolate shakes. No one ever got the motivation to rob a bank or kill someone from weed.

I just read an editorial the other day which said the pharmaceutical companies don't want it legalized. It would cut down on their profits and that makes a lot of sense. And I'm a firm believer that it pads the pockets of too many people in power. If it were legal, a lot of money people would not make the money they have made off of it. Too many lies about its use has been spread to people who don't know the truth about its benefits. At one time in the 1800's, farmers were required by the government to grow a minimal amount of it. I'm not sure why, but I think it was probably one of the few good laws. I would much rather be around people smoking than be around a bunch of people drinking. Smoking people are much better company. We need to find a way to educate masses of the public about the truth behind marijuana instead of letting the government continue to spread lies. But than that seems to be what this government does best. That's another subject. I'm a firm believer in legalization.

Because like anything that gives the public fun, the government chooses to restirict or ban. After the "Roaring Twenties" when people had freetime to enjoy life, the the tobacco industries easily convinced the Republican controlled Congrees that marijuana was very dangerous and the ban went into effect. NOW, of corse trying to control illegal drugs is too much big money making industry for marijuana to be legalised. There are many natural substances used before 'wonder drugs' suitable as cures for common and complicated illnesses, but those persons advocating legallising marijauna are condemned as being lunatics, anarchist and trouble makers.

It's hard to say, because there were a number of factors at work.

"In the United States, the significant legislation was the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act, a federal culmination of many separate state laws that had been enacted in the previous years. Some claim that the U.S. laws may have been in response to lobbying by makers of synthetic fibers that competed with hemp. While hemp was not their main competitor, it was a much easier target than cotton or wool, for example. Critics of the American prohibition have also pointed to the possibility that there was a racial underpinning to the criminalisation of marijuana in America, since it was known to be a popular and widely-used recreational drug in the African-American and Latino communities."

The main reason it's still illegal today seems clear. Most politicians at the federal level get too much political advantage, and possibly financial advantage, from continuing prohibition.

In reference to one of the above answers, which offers info about the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937, this was the culmination of efforts on the parts of certain Southern congressmen and senators who had financial interests in tobacco. These people hired a man named J.D. Anslinger as their "czar." Anslinger was paid by the tobacco growers to go to various southern states (notably Florida) and corral Black inmates who were on death row for committing hienous murders, and pay them or have their sentences commuted if they would agree to testify before Congress that they had committed these crimes while under the influence of "the devil weed." None of these inmates had ever been near marijuana, but Congress didn't know that, and so the tobacco guys were able to pull the wool over their fellows eyes in Congress. As a result, these well-meaning but misguided people passed the law in 1937. All based upon lobbyism and Anslinger's lies.

There are a lot of arguments on why marijuana is illegal.

Some people state, "because the Govt won't be able to tax it."

others say, "It was made unlawful during Prohibition, because people we using marijuana in place of alcohol."

Then some say, "You can have a social drink of alcohol, but you can not have just a social hit off a joint."

Although few users of marijuana develop dependence, some do. But they appear to be less likely to do so than users of other drugs (including alcohol and nicotine), and marijuana dependence appears to be less severe than dependence on other drugs." (National Institute of Medicine

Because its addictive and alters people's mood/actions. Its just like tobacco and alcohol except those have been around too long for people to just be able to nix them. Marijuana is a fairly new phenonmenon and governments are attempting to stamp it out now.
