-4 is greater than -12. here's why:
-12 -11 -10 -9 -8 -7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6...
Initially it's counter-intuitive, but looking at the numberline above, you can see that to the right of the zero, each number is larger than the one before. To the left of the zero, the opposite is true: each number to the left is "more negative". So -12 is more negative than -4. You can say that -4 is closer to a positive value than -12 is. In that sense it is greater.
This question came up in my college algebra class, and is somewhat difficult to keep in mind.
