Kids want to be known in school. They can do this by being with the "in crown" and being popular. If they arent popular then they arent getting the attention they want and this drives them crazy. They dont understand that there is a world after high school and that no one cares what they did in high school afterwards.

Well, as a "high school kid", more and more people are starting to not give a crap anymore. I mean, sure, there are still the cliques that believe that they're far an away better people, but really, whereas there used to be many, many cliques, there are maybe five now, and the middle three are still the same popularity. As for the people who make a big deal about being popular (to answer your question instead of wasting your time), some of them seem like they truly crave attention because of a possible childhood abandonment, or, more likely, the parents just had spent their entire childhood telling them how great they were until their egos were so in need of feeding that they sought satiation elsewhere (high school). Some could just want to be popular because that's the image of a happy student.

I think a lot of it is based on peer pressure. If you come from the "right" family background, dress and act like the "in" crowd then chances are you'll be somewhat popular or accepted. Teenagers have a hard time as it is just growing up and adjusting to their changing bodies and hormones, add to that the need to be liked and it becomes a big deal to them.

Sometimes I think it's because high school kids have nothing more exciting to aspire to. Generally, good careers are years off as is the money that comes with them. The media makes popularity look exciting and, honestly, when I was in high school I thought it looked appealing myself. Popular kids tend to be very good looking and to have a magnetism about them.

One word: PUBERTY

during puberty, teenagers in high school are forming their I.D. - their self indentification. They are answering the question:
"Who am I". Whether they do it by dress, by jewelry, by promiscuous sex,etc...they are shaping themselves to become the people they will be for the rest of their lives.

Peer pressure, and the desire to "fit in" are mixed in with puberty since the body is undergoing deep sexual, emotional and physical changes. Once puberty is over, it may not feel as though its a big deal anymore because your transformation is allready done.

Alot of kids don't survive the transformation due to suicides and drug addictions.

I'm a high school student and I think times have changed since you were last there! yes there are still the popular kids around but most people don't strive to be them... today most teens are happy with who they are. i think its more of a middle school thing when kids are trying to figure out who they are more.

i never understood it, all that i could figure is that they didnt have enough emotional support at home, or that they were raised to be superficial. either way i wasnt into the popularity thing. i wanted to be different from the average person, and ended up drawing attention to myself, now i just blend in, i have a family to occupy me now

that is society, it is what we see on tv
even out in adult land, if one dresses differently, you are 'unpopular', made fun of, talked about.

it is nature
