I get very depressed watching the news to the point where my boyfriend has to turn it, he does not allow me to watch it to much. I was really depressed today watching the clip where the ex-boyfriend or husband killed the mother and her boyfriend and the ten year old daughter ran and he chased her and killed her also. That made me cry.

All right, I wasn't going to bite on this one until I saw the kind of answers you were getting. How do I get depressed by watching the news? Let me count the ways (with apologies to Elizabeth Barrett Browning--see below).

1. The late news, carried by the local stations, is very often a tear sheet of police calls. There is not much there.
2. The content of the national news is quite upsetting these days. We have an administration in Washington that is quite literally run amuck, not listening to the will of the people, and failing in its most important missions (not enough room to enumerate here). Let's not blame the media for this news being bad or depressing. Please be registered to vote and take it to the polls this November, OK?
3. Golly willikers, there ain't a lot of that "good news" on TV. What's up with that? Folks, stuff that runs smoothly and works well ISN'T NEWS. If the war in Iraq ever does that, however, that WILL be news and you'll hear about it, I promise you. If you want to be encouraged, try this link to people that are going out and making a difference in the world:

Then make up your mind that you'll do something positive--support one of the organizations you learn about on the above link, or do something positive in your own community. You won't be as depressed.

And thanks for reading my lament.

On a positive note, read the following penance to EBB:
------
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways
by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861)

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

yes, I get sick of hearing all the bad news! Can't there by any good news for a change? Let's focus on the positive things at least for a few minutes of every newscast.

No, I get angry at the barrage of lies and half-truths we are subjected to.

For instance, I see that a number of decent, young American servicemen have been pointlessly killed in yet another roadside bomb in Iraq and it upsets me, but then I think further and try to see the other side of it and why America is at war in Iraq to begin with and I get angry.

The Israel/Lebanon conflict is another example.

If new makes you depressed, this news will put a smile on your face..........http://www.nbc5i.com/news/9748247/detail.html

I do not watch it anymore because it is not news, it is the ills of the world crammed into 30 minutes. These people broadcast to the lowest common denomination of persons. These are people who take joy in the misery of others, because they are so pathetic and take the joy that someone else is as miserable as them.

Yes. The media only reports bad news and then hypes it up for all its worth.
