Your fuel injectors are clogged up. They sell products to help clean your injectors at automotive stores, and wal-mart. This is the cheap way to make improvements in the performance. You can also call a shop and find out what they will charge to clean your injectors. This will be more expensive, but all in all will work the best.

Is it leaking oil? Neon's of that generation had a reputation for blowing head gaskets. In fact, there was a recall on them at one time. What you should do is take the car to a Dodge or Chrysler dealer and tell them to run the VIN on dealerconnect to see if there are any open recalls. Also ask them to check for any technical service bulletins. It could be that it needs a tune-up; clogged fuel filter; it may need new ignition wires. Even if there is no open recall and your head gasket is bad, don't pay for it in full. Tell the dealer to call their factory representative as you want assistance from them to pay for the job. They may offer to split the cost with you or say they will pay for the part, but you pay for the labor. You should say you want a 50/50 split as the head gasket kit is much cheaper than the labor.

12 year old Neon small car did not have much power when new. And automatics are almost unsafe pulling into traffic. Save your $300 and more in no time you can go out and get a Neon SRT with over 200 horse power.

There is a "performance" chip that you can put in the computer, - it will cost you less than $100 - if you buy it in the right place!
However that little engine (my 96 has same thing) has a power curve that puts out very little power till you get over 2000 rpm - or so on it. Mine without any changes "patches" starting out (standard transmission & and stock computer)- that is plenty for me! The "curve" is more like a "wedge" if you had it on paper!! By the way it has 185000 miles on it too!

No matter what you do... it's a Neon. You're options are limited to your available horsepower. I had a 99 and had the same problem for the entire time I owned it... It's just not a quick car hun!
