Your choices are either the TOYOTA PRIUS, Honda Civic Hybrid or the HONDA FIT.
Honda Fit is a small, ugly, economy car. The Fit only gets about 30 MPG but, the difference is, the Fit costs about $17,000 LOADED ( far less than the Prius loaded).
The Honda Civic Hybrid averages about 50 MPG city or highway and costs about $25,000 loaded. The civic is a trendier car than the Fit, but it lags behind the prius in MPG and overall fun factor.
Toyota Prius runs about $28,000 LOADED and its restyling are not so bad - very futuristic. The Prius gets about 60 Miles per gallon City or 50 Highway.
I did a side by side comparison for you on Yahoo.

probably a hybrid, something made in japan, or a diesel volkswagon gets good. If you just drive smart and take car of maintence you will increase mileage by quite a bit.
