Scientists claim that it is possible to make energy travel faster than the speed of light, but this has only been possible for things with no mass - electromagnetic radiation (light, microwaves). If you look around on google, you can find several articles on what are apparently successful attempts.

The equation for the amount of energy required to accelerate an object with mass to a certain speed prohibits an object with mass to accelerate to the speed of light. This is true because when dealing with high speeds (10% of the speed of light and above) the normal kinetic energy equation no longer applies. According to the theory of relativity, as an object increases in speed, its mass increases as well. However, up to 10% of the speed of light, this effect is negligable.

As you speed up near the speed of light, this effect increases exponentially, continuing to the point where the amount of energy needed to accelerate the mass more is infinity. As you know, you can't create "infinite energy"; this speed is what the speed of light is (the equation contains the speed of light, so this point being the speed of light is no co-incidence).

Wormholes offer a possibiliy of travelling faster than the speed of light however. This is not done by increasing the actual speed of the object but rather "bending" space time to decrease the actual distance between the starting point and finish point. ( see diagram: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/af/Worm3.jpg ) In effect this could allow people to travel at "faster than the speed of light" without actually breaking any relativistic rules.

The actual creation and existence of wormholes is totally theoretical though. Nobody knows how to make one and I doubt in the next 400 years we'll get any close to the possibility.

Which, by the way, is a shame and probably not what you are looking for.

PS - to the guy below. Photons have no mass, they are bursts of electromagetic radiation. Like gamma rays. Or TV signals. Although they exhibit wave particle duality, their particle nature does not mean that they have any mass.

Trust me. First paragraph, second line, first sentence.

No matter how fast something travels it can always accelerate or decellerate.

Light travels at various different speeds.

Yes, it is possible.

If that were true, photons would need infinite energy to be able to travel at the speed of light. All light would need infinite power in order to move. We would be in darkness and our electricity bills would be outrageous just to light one bulb.

To be honest, there is no need to. When we have the ability to control time then the speed at which you move at would be mute.

In the next 100 years we'll be able to control time(ie. suspended animation) You could be in a capsule and in your time you only travelled 15 days but in reality you could of travelled 100 light years. Of course earth would no longer exist when you return.

There is research done but so far only the black hole can travell faster than the spped of light.

No, it's impossibe.

Only can tavel beyond the speed of light "things" that not transport informaation, that is nothing.
