what a question.... this has to be so far the hardest question i've had to answer. Both these bands contributed so much to the rock world... after reading "Scar Tissue" Anthony Keidis book you realise how much longer the Chili Peppers have been around and that gives you alot more respect for them.. but you see how Nirvana topped the charts in the short time they were around. so i give credit to both of them.. But when it comes down to it Chili Peppers would have to be my fave.
