Good question, but I can't answer definitely. Though I'd like to think I'm good-hearted, I'm also cynical enough to know it'll depend on the friend and the situation he or she is in.
One friend of mine is having a tough time in Australia because of a pregnancy and a cancelled wedding, but seen the distance I can't do much more than to stay in touch, listen and try to cheer her up. When I worked in England another friend/colleague of mine got fired and had to move flats. Though this meant he could've pretty much 'disappeared' I lent him 200 pounds so he could pay the rent. And thankfully, he did return it. For another very good friend who finds herself a bit alone, I'd walk 400 miles barefoot just to see her and have a chat over coffee. But I'm not sure if that counts ;o)

As far as it takes for them to no longer be in need. No conditions short of killing or hurting other friends or my relatives.

Since my husband is my best earthly friend, I hope that I would be able to give my life for him if I needed to do so.
