What kinda things are they looking for when a company does a background check on a new employee?

if they offered the job to you pending the back ground check the job is yours.
The background check is very common. They are looking for criminal activity and things to that effect. Also they are surely checking that you didn't lie on your application or in the resume.

Don't worry! It's routine to check credit reports, police reports, and to verify that you are who you say your are. I'd worry more if they didn't check a person's background. Your co-workers will be dopey enough without having drug addictions and firearms.

They look for things like felony convictions, sex offenders, your legal eligibility to work in the US, they just want to make sure they are not hiring a fraudulant person.

Convictions... theft, assault, forgery, fraud... they don't care about petty family squabbles... Just looking for anything that shows you're a thief or that you were lying on your application.

They check if you have had any felonies on your record .. like if you steal or have molested children. Thats about it.
