They are not particularly high mountains and they have few really good skiing places during the winter. But they are very picturesque during the Fall when the leaves turn to brilliant different colors of reds, oranges, and yellows.
There is also the famous Appalachia trail that you can hike from northern Georgia to Maine. And there is the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains west of Ashville, NC, and the Blue Ridge Parkway that runs from southwest of Ashville, NC, to past Roanoke, VA, over 600 miles of pleasant 30 mph traffic on two lane country roads that follow the ridges of the mountains.
There are plenty of crafts museums along the Parkway and restaurants to eat at and lodges to stay in. It goes by some the highest mountains, including Mt. Mitchell, the highest mountain east of the Mississippi River. The Appalachia Trail goes to the top of Mt. Rogers, the higest mountain in Virginia.
During the summer I live in the Appalachian mountains and enjoy the cool evenings, not far from the New River in Virginia. I live in Florida most of the year.
The thing interesting about the New River is that it is older than the Appalachian mountains as it cuts across the mountains. This could only be if the river were there before the mountains formed about 360 million years ago.
The people that live in the mountains are a fairly wide mix of people. It is true that you can find very backward, superstitious, ignorant people there. There are many people there, for example, who believe that the Bible is literally true. But you can also find some of the most brilliant, intelligent, well educated, thoughtful people there too. You find what you look for.

The appalachians are the oldest mountain range in the US. Our mountains had years of erosion, rain, snow, etc. to wear them down. Rockies are younger and pointier because of lack of stress fromt the weather. You should see the new river. its beautiful. people come from all over to our new river gorge bridge to parachute and bungee-jump. white water rafting too. lots of fun. its also on the WV quarter. the bridge and the river

Why does anything like a geographical feature have to be special?
Some people call it home. Some people find the view lovely. Some people grow up there and can't wait to get out.
Same everywhere, the world over.

Very old mountain chain, the oldest still around today. Also, a physical barrier to westward colonisation by the British.

All I know is that it used to be connected to the Atlas mountains in Africa before the continents began to drift. This is all I know and I find it a very interesting fact.
