Get a narrow (1/2") piece of balsa wood and something to serve as a weight. Put a small hole in one end of the balsa wood. Do the math per your science text and notes to give you an even number of swings in the 5 minute period. Cut the balsa wood to the calculated length, add the weight at the end opposite the hole, hang it up so it swings freely and start it in motion.

The period equation for a pendulum is:
T=2[pi]*â(L/g) <
where T is measured in seconds, and L is pendulum length measured from the pivot point to the center of gravity of the bob.
g is acceleration gravity. but gravity is different in different places on the earth's surface.there is a site (3rd link) that lets you find the exact gravity for your location provided you know your approximate latitude and longitude. If you have google earth you can find it very easily.
so if you build a pendulum with a period of 2 seconds, 150 periods will count five minutes.
your equation would look like this:
g* â(T/(2[pi])=L
so substitute 2 for T and enter your gravity and solve and you have the length your pendulum needs to have for period of 2 seconds
