Yes to both, but I was only successful with nails due to other means of protection.
Scratching a man (or woman) who is attacking you will distract them long enough to get in a few good hits, kicks, jabs, or whatever you can do. When you are in fear for your safety, fair play goes out the window. Scratch their face, it distract them the most. Then use your fists, hands, feet, keys, or whatever is handy to injure other sensitive parts of their body. Knees, feet, shins, belly, neck, it doesn't matter. The more damage you can inflict while they are holding their face with one hand, the better chance you have of getting away and finding nearby help.

I've never used them, but here's what I think about the idea...
As far as a solid self defense - hell no.
Nails and biting are a great distraction for creating space and time between you and your attacker. Even if you take a chunk out of his face it will only piss him off unless you follow it up with something else...
Running is your best option, but knee strikes, hammer fists, elbows, etc.. may be more appropriate at the time...
In general nails, bites and slaps are effective if you use them for what they are intended.
Also, nails collect critical trace evidence in the event you are unable to positively identify your attacker.

HELL YES!! I lived with years with an abusive husband and my long nails were my only weapon! (Thank God he died 6 years ago of a massive heart attack) (I was separated from him when it happened) Used them on BOTH husbands!!

Um... well... i have really long nails... and my lil brother always thinks he can beat me up! so... i walk up to him when he tries to and dig my nails into him..... he just cries and tells my mom that i pinched him!... i just say that he started it...

i use nails on the fence all the time...yes they work well with a hammer...
