Yes, and more. Billy Joel, if you recall, signed a devastating contract early in his career that essentially placed him in bondage. Because of his fierce tenacity, he kept a low profile (Piano Man was about those days) until he was able to negotiate a better deal.
The combination of his brilliant mind and fierce determination would have an even greater impact on today's market loaded down with weenies and clones.

His sound was unique in the 70s, but if he played the exact same music now, it would sound pretty dated and lame. It's all about context - back when Joel became popular, disco was king and so much music was pretty forgettable. He is a very talented songwriter and singer and had a great appeal back then. If he wrote a different style of music today, I bet he'd have a following, kind of like John Mayer, I bet.

Yes. He's a very talented musician, and if he were 21 he'd be doing different stuff than he did in the 70's. He would be doing stuff that 21 year olds (+/- a few decades) would enjoy.

No. Today w/ Amercian Idol being the way to go for getting noticed & the internet presenting SO much more choce, I think he'd've gotten lost in the shuffle. He mighta had a hit or 2, but wouldn't've had half the success I think.
He was around at a time when the "singer/songwriter" thing was at it's peak.
