from experience (lived in west Africa most my life), I would say statistics are WAY wrong! the adult population is being devastated. 30 to 50% of the sexually active people are infected. add to that the kids born from HIV parents. Remember that blood test are expensive so tests are not always systematic. Remember that medical facilities are far in between and MANY people in villages cannot afford to go to the doctor and get tested / let alone treated. Remember that the traditional medicine men are prevalent in villages and many will NOT go to a "western" doctor. FYI: A small well run clinic in Ivory Coast main town (Abidjan) had 50% of the blood test coming back HIV positive. That was in 200!
On the AIDS-in-Africa subject, do NOT trust the stats!!! they are not realistic!!! if you don't believe me, try to go there!

Every country in Africa has their own statistics but you check the CIA worldfactbook online ( just type this into your search box ) and select a country. They give the percentage of the population living with AIDS.
