Well, Vitamin C in the medical sense isnt actually proven or a direct assault on the basic common cold. Most of the common vitamin c to bust a cold traditions are strong set by (i forget the name) a nobel prize winner who advocated regular vitamin c intake to reduce all kinds of sicknesses, including severe ones such as polio and heart disease.
On to what you care about:
Vitamin C, in my beleif, does help a cold even if it cant quite be proven. But more importantly for it to show any actual benefits you need to be taking it a lot. those airbornes work for a reason because they have the amount of vitamin c necesary to do the job. Which is 8 grams every 30 minutes-hour.
Now you're average peeled orange, its gonna have about 50 mg, so to save ya the math dont bother eating oranges to try and make yourself feel better. airbornes and vitamin c/multivitamins will do the job however. and the coldbuster smoothie from jamba juice aint so bad either :)
Last couple notes for ya, vitamin C reduces the duration and severity of colds but not the frequency. so it'll weaken em but it wont necesarily stop em. and vitamin C is much more effective for children, but its effective for anyone who'd like to give it a shot

trials show that vitamin C reduces the duration and severity of colds but not the frequency
The duration of colds was reduced by 7% for adults and 15% for children
the mind and body must divert energy from its usual business of growth and development to fight a cold
lack of vitamin c results in scurvy
easy bruising, or bruising with no apparent cause
loose teeth
superficial bleeding
fragility of blood vessels
poor healing
compromised immunity
mild anemia
As a participant in hydroxylation, vitamin C is needed for the production of collagen in the connective tissue. These fibers are ubiquitous throughout the body, providing firm but flexible structure. Some tissues have a greater percentage of collagen, especially: skin, mucous membranes, teeth and bones.
Vitamin C is required for synthesis of dopamine, noradrenaline and adrenaline in the nervous system or in the adrenal glands.
Vitamin C is also needed to synthesize carnitine, important in the transfer of energy to the cell mitochondria.
The tissues with greatest percentage of vitamin C — over 100 times the level in blood plasma — are the adrenal glands, pituitary, thymus, corpus luteum, and retina.
The brain, spleen, lung, testicle, lymph nodes, liver, thyroid, small intestinal mucosa, leukocytes, pancreas, kidney and salivary glands usually have 10 to 50 times the concentration present in blood plasma.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant and acts as a substrate for ascorbate peroxidase.

Getting your o.j. will make you feel better, it makes me feel cheery, like getting a little sun in the glass.
Actually, the vitamin C in it boosts your immune system, helping your body fight the germs.
Also, for the sore throat that usually accompanies a cold, the citrus acids in your lemons will help cut the "phlem" (uuggghhh, but we all know about it...) that gets stuck in your throat. I use hot green tea, with the lemon, you are supposed to put honey in it to soothe your sore throat, but I can't stand honey. The green tea is an antioxidant, so it also is good for you.
Other than that, use warm salt water to gargle, and don't laugh -- I used to laugh at my mom, but I'm laughing not now - as a nasal cleanser. It keeps the poisons out, making you cough less.
(I think you can buy them at Walmart - the saline drops for your nose, but if not, just make up salt water, close one nostril, and "sniff" it up, not too hard, you just want it in the lower - nose - part of your nasal cavity, not all the way up.)
Some people take echinacea to boost their immune system, but it is a natural antibiotic, so I like to use it only when necessary.
(If you have an allergy, there are drops for specific allergies at most health food stores.)
The chicken soup, and a vaporizer with the Vicks Vapor Rub never hurts; AND-- I definitely recpmmend a lot of pampering and rest.
P.S. Take your multivitamins too. You have to feed your cells, to keep your body in good shape.
