I am just curious how I can determine if a book is a first edition. I think I remember hearing once that that series of numbers (1-10) on the copyright page is used to determine, but I cannot remember how to decipher them.

If the number 1 is among the numbers you refer to then it is a first edition. They delete one of the numbers in sequence for every printing.

The numbers are one guideline. You will need a good book on the subject. Each publisher has a way of indicating whether or not the book is a first edition. Some, quite simply say First Edition. Others will say First Trade Edition which is not a genuine first edition. If the number 1 does not appear in a series, it probably is not a first edition. Get a good book for determining this information.

Some books are marked as first editions. But generally speaking, most published works only have one edition. The vast majority die in the first edition, never to be produced again.

Book collecting is complex. The link below gives some insight into the meaning of the term “first edition.”

If in the series of numbers they are all there, including the 1, it is a first edition. Numbers are filed off for each printing. The same page may also say "First Edition".

it should say so in one of the first pages, where it has the publishing information. should have the year, the copyright holder, the edition or how many reprints it has so far, among other things.
