yeah....often less is more. Less drugs, less surgery, less doctors.
But some diseases really require a doctor and they can be cured well. Like real dangerous bacterial infections....you may need antibiotics. So you need a doctor.
Or if you had an accident and you don't know how many bones and where are broken - you need a doctor to find out and take approriate steps.
Or some cancers can be really addressed with medication (most can not ).
Or - severe pain requires a doc for manamgent. You may need opium derivatives or strong drugs. So then - a doc can be really useful.
It is good to be awake when it comes to expensive drugs for all kinds of conditions which could be either prevented or perhaps healed by a healthy lifestyle (regular exercise, normal weight, healthy meals, no stress, no smoking, no drugs....)
So - it is really hard to find out for yourself whether you need a doc or not when you are not one yoursel. A question like your mother's is very hard to answer for a doctor. Because....
I am wondering why your mother can't have any milk or calcium. A human body needs calcium, without it can not exist. So - at least a bit she needs to have in her diet. A glass of milk has calcium, but it is not catastrophical much.
As someone here said - medicine is not an exact science. That is very true.
However - I for myself try to avoid doctors and medication and hospitals at all. And try to live a very healthy lifestyle to keep it that way. Only when I had a uti I ran to get antibiotics (and told the doc what exactly I needed). Or lately a little accident I had to get an MRI.
But - I have a scientific education, for me it is much easier to understand drugs, effects and my education included a lot of knowledge about the human body as well. So I can make my own mind up from an informed point of view (that's why I think less is more).
I guess the key for you is that you find a doctor who is really "good". An ethical one. Someone who does not just prescribe you some drugs so you leave them alone or squeeze as many people as possible through their schedule so they make the most money. There is a number of good docs out there.
Also for you it might make sense to inform yourself and learn, learn learn. Like take the example of your mother. Have you researched her condition and why she can not have calcium or milk? Or just less calcium? Or just when she takes certain drugs? But an hour after it's fine? I am sure there is a lot of information on the web, also about the exact quantities and so on.

You will never believe in health care workers until one of them pulls you out of the "jaws of death", it is not a simple as it was even thirty years ago, the state of the art is so advanced that no one person can keep up, a 26 year old intern will likely no the latest poop on some new drug but the 67 year old cardiologist will know that all you need to do is take it easy for three months, it's a tossup deal...I don't like doctors either much, but I hope I get a team deal with a young one and an old one, because I want to live for 54 more years and go through two or more 20 year old girl friends!!! if my wife reads this I'm dead by morning and no doctor can help that.

I HAD very high blood pressure since 12 years old and into my 40's and funny I didn't die yet. It started as hypertension with librium with no results. Many medicines today directly affect your kidneys so I told the doctor hey my kidneys are OK why should I mess with them too! I've had no results until I bought an underground info report for $7.
This is an old european method that worked in days so be close to a blood pressure test so it doesn't go low:
Get a large jug of spring water. One eggplant and cut it into one inch cubes with the skin. Fill jug with cubes and close tightly and let it sit for 5 days in the refrigerator. After 5 days remove the cubes and let sit tightly closed for another 5 days in refrigerator. Take one shot (ounce) a day and drink it. It tastes a little like apple cider. Do it the second day and get a pressure test at one of the pharmacies that have them. Continue until it is down to normal.

I think this kind of thing happens too often, but we still need doctors like your med. student--because too many things are over our heads with regard to our health.
I do think that we need to be our own health care advocates and not just take the doctor at his word on serious matters--like you guys checking with another doc. I always research a doctor's decision if it is on something serious.
I once went to a Physician's Assistant for a bladder infection. I knew the answer but I asked him anyway if caffeine was okay (like diet coke or coffee) he sort of thought for a minute and decided, yes, it might even be good since it is a diuretic.
I already knew from past study that caffeine is very irritating to the bladder so if one has an infection, do not take in caffeine. I never went back to that quack again.
We really have to be our own best friends when it comes to medicine.---but a couple of different times I would have died if not for doctors so...you just have to be very careful in taking their word for something.

You go sista! I believe the same thing. I do think that there are times when you do need a doctor. But more often than not, you don't need to go.Your right doctors hold stock in certain medicines. Soooooo, another way to make some $$$ "on the side" is to prescribe it to their patients. I think doctors are too pill happy. You have a pain, they have a pill to fix it. The more medicine you get the more side effects you have and are back in to see the doctor for those side effects, in turn he gives even more medicine, with more side effects and it is just a vicious circle.

doctors only help ya enough to get u out of their office fast and get ur money. and then they make you come back again time and again for the same problem and to take some more of your money. You are better off reading about it somewhere yourself and taking natural pills...works better than the stuff that doctors give anyway with 2 billion side effects. My mom has a huge blood pressure problem too but when she feels really sick and it is really high she takes some garlic pills and some potassium pills. Tell your mom to get some. Hope she feels better!

A lot of doctors are influenced by drug companies to sell their drugs in a variety of ways. However, there are good doctors out there, you just have to find one. You did the right thing to research the situation -- but you shouldn't condemn all doctors because of this guy. It is always wise to resesarch and get second opinions.
